Selecting and editing lines

Select a lyric and the editor offers rhymes, synonyms, syllable changes and a rewrite. What appears depends on how much you selected.

Selecting text is how you point a tool at a particular line. Nothing in the editor works on your selection until you make one, and what the app offers back depends on how much you picked.

Select a line and two things appear: a bar above the keyboard, and a menu on the selection itself. They hold different tools, so it is worth knowing which is which.

The bar above the keyboard#

Three buttons, and they are the ones you will reach for most.

Button What it does Available when
Rhyme Opens the rhyme sheet for what you selected. The selection is one line or less.
Thesaurus Opens synonyms and related words. The selection is one line or less.
Rewrite Hands the selection to Wish Workshop to change. The selection is six lines or less.

Those limits are why Rewrite reaches further than the other two. Rhyme and Thesaurus are word tools and need a phrase to work on. Rewrite is a writing tool, so it can take a whole stanza.

Why the buttons go grey#

They do not disappear when they are unavailable. They dim, so the bar stays in the same place and you can see what you are missing.

If you ask for a rewrite on more than the app can handle, it tells you rather than sending it. The cap is six lines and 500 characters. For a long verse, work through it a few lines at a time.

The menu on the selection#

Tap the arrow at the end of the small Cut and Copy bar and the rest of the menu opens.

Some items are always there. Others appear only when the selection is small enough for them to make sense.

Item When it appears
Cut, Copy Always.
Paste When there is text on the clipboard.
Select All When you have not already selected everything.
Record Always. Starts a recording anchored to this line.
Save to Concepts Always. Files the selection as a concept for later.
Link to Recording Always. Attaches an existing recording to these words.
Sounds Like The selection is three words or fewer.
Word Associations The selection is three words or fewer.
+1 Syllable The selection is a single line.
-1 Syllable The selection is a single line with at least two syllables.

Record and Link to Recording are the two people miss. They tie audio to specific words rather than to the song as a whole, so you can play back the take that belongs to a particular line. See Recordings.

Moving whole lines instead#

Everything above edits text. When you want to reorder, duplicate or delete whole lines rather than rewrite them, use Arrange mode, which is the grid button at the bottom right of the editor.

The difference is worth holding on to. Selecting text points a writing tool at your words. Arrange mode moves your words around without changing them.
