Audio#

Format Extension
Apple audio .m4a, .caf
MP3 .mp3
WAV .wav
AIFF .aiff, .aif
AAC .aac, .mp4
FLAC .flac

Everything is converted to M4A once it is in the app, on your device rather than on a server.

On the web the conversion happens in your browser, and the file picker offers the same extensions. What actually opens depends on what your browser can decode, so MP3, WAV and M4A are the safe choices. After conversion a file must be under 60 MB, which a recording within your plan's length always is.

Importing needs Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox cannot, because it cannot make the AAC audio that Lyric Genie stores.

A stereo file, such as a demo, stays stereo when you import it on the web, and is saved at a higher quality than a recording made in the browser.

Recording on the web. A recording made in the browser is saved as an AAC .m4a (mono, 44.1 kHz), so it plays on your iPhone as well. Recording needs a browser that can encode AAC: Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox shows a message instead of recording.

Detection is based on the file's actual type rather than its name, so a file with a misleading extension is still routed correctly.

Photos in the chat#

The collaborator chat takes any picture your device or browser can open, such as a JPEG or PNG. Photos are scaled down to at most 2048 pixels on the longest side and saved as JPEG. On the web a photo can be up to 30 MB before it is scaled.

Audio files sent in the chat take the same formats as an import, above.

Lyrics and text#

Format Extension
Plain text .txt
Rich text .rtf
Markdown .md
PDF .pdf
Word document .docx

Sharing into the app iOS app only#

Lyric Genie appears in the iOS share sheet for both audio and text, so a voice memo or a note can be sent to it directly rather than exported and imported. Every format on this page works that way, and so does plain shared text with no file behind it at all.

See Importing files for what happens next.

Size limits#

Kind Limit
Audio By length, not size. 5 minutes free, 60 minutes on Pro.
Text 5 MB
